Hackney, Orthodox Jews, Muslims, Larry David, Palestinian chicken and Alan Dershowitz

Recently leaders in both the Orthodox Jewish and Islamic community in my hood of Hackney, got together and hashed out a  deal which would include the North London Islamic Community Centre and mosque, on Cazenove Road, on the local Shomrims patrol watch.

It was a win win for everyone concerned. The Orthodox Jewish community, who have come under fire for a variety of reasons by other residents in Hackney, have benefited from the positive publicity, my Muslim brothers and sisters in the borough can sleep easier knowing Shomrim and Hackney has their back and the Police borough commander can wax lyric about everyone in Hackney singing Kumbaya.  Hey, what can I say, politics as usual right?

It wasn’t that long ago the Met police disapproved of Shomrims formation in the N16/E5 area.  They issued the following statement:

There is an issue of members of the public putting themselves at physical risk.

“Through attending an escalating situation, interfering with possible evidence or potentially risking criminal prosecution themselves, should their conduct in dealing with members of the public justify that course of action.

“We would always encourage members of the public, from all communities, to contact their local police Safer Neighbourhoods team to discuss crime and safety issues in their area.”

This week it changed to this:

Hackney’s Borough Commander Matthew Horne, said: “Hackney’s faith communities have a long history of working and living together in harmony. The community work conducted day in and day out by Shomrim has been extended to assisting with reporting anything of concern around Mosques as well as Synagogues.

He continued: “For those of us privileged to work with both communities in Hackney this comes as no surprise and is a perfect antidote to those that would seek to divide us through hate.

My cynicism aside (you know I can’t help it 🙂 ) got me thinking of the Israel/Palestine conflict and what Abbas,  Netanyahu and those other cowboys in the Middle East could learn from our guys in N16. It also got me thinking of what Alan Dershowitz (he of Claus von Bülow, OJ Simpson fame and Harvard Law professor) did in 2011.

Alan Dershowitz

Alan Dershowitz

He sent a DVD copy of my favorite episode of Curb Your Enthusiasm,   – Palestinian Chicken, to Benjamin Netanyahu. In an interview with The Columbian Current  Dershowitz said:  “I recently sent a copy of “Palestinian Chicken,” that Larry David gave me, to Prime Minister Netanyahu—with the suggestion that he invite Abbas over to watch it together. And maybe if they both get a good laugh, they can begin a negotiating process“.

When asked if he’d gotten feedback, Dershowitz said:   “I don’t know, but I know that Netanyahu has received the DVD, and he was looking forward to watching it. So it may be that Larry David will not only win Emmys, but he may even qualify for the Nobel Peace Prize, if his episode could bring together Netanyahu and Abbas, and bring Abbas to the negotiating table”.

Hey it’s a start and the episode is hillarious, if you haven’t watched it, do so or at least the Youtube clip. If you have young children around or at work, you may want to be discreet watching it when it gets to 3:24. Just a friendly warning.

Oh and one other thing, I’m guessing Hackney can now be dubbed the Borough of Brotherly Love eh?
