Soprano star James Gandolfini dies – only 51

Just saw a tweet from The Hollywood Reporter that the indisputable star of the Sopranos, James Gandolfini who played Tony Soprano, died in Italy today Wednesday, 19 June (well earlier in the day, It’s just after midnight, so technically Thursday in London) while attending the 59th Taormina Film Festival in Sicily.  It’s believed he died from a massive heart attack. This is just really sad news.

When I started scouring the internet even his Wikipedia entry hadn’t been updated.

He was a big fella and I don’t know if his obesity was a factor, but it wouldn’t surprise me and his death doesn’t really come as a surprise either.

The Soprano’s pretty much put HBO on the map back in 1999/2000 when it premiered and I’d say helped HBO become what it is today.

They didn’t come bigger than Tony Soprano, not since Larry Hagman played JR Ewing in Dallas and the launch of The Sopranos. It was the birth of the same cult like following I remember Dallas to be in the 80’s.  I didn’t discover it until almost the end of the first season, despite hearing people rave about it. Then some time between 2002-2003 I missed a lot of it due to my move back to California from Texas and bunch of crap going on in my life. I need to get the box set.

Despite the violence and some of its darkness The Sopranos was a damn good show, it was real, the nuances of modern life.

Gandolfini just became a dad last October and has a teenage son from a previous marriage. Man that was one messy divorce from Marcy. 51 and just gone like that, life is so fleeting.
